Dartmouth and the South Hams
Dartmouth is a unique, historic port at the mouth of the River Dart, in the beautiful South Hams of
Devon. The River Dart is a tranquil river winding its way from the rolling hills of Dartmoor, through
market towns such as Totnes, and passing by sleepy, picturesque villages on its way out to sea, at
the point where Dartmouth Castle has been standing majestically on guard since the late 14 th
century.
The coast roads and extensive coastal paths allow you to explore timeless fishing villages and clean, sheltered beaches and bays, surrounded by tree-lined cliffs dipping down into the clear blue sea. Whether you travel by foot, bicycle, boat, steam train or car there is always much to do and see. It’s also the perfect place to simply stop for a while and relax. Dartmouth and the South Hams area offers a wonderfully wide range of attractions to interest visitors of all ages. The town itself is rich in culture and heritage. It has a museum (inside the 17th-century merchant’s house in the Butterwalk); a charming 19th-century market (market days are on Friday and Tuesday, but some shops housed in the market open daily); the well-maintained Royal Avenue Gardens (with tropical palms, colourful borders and much used bandstand) and numerous enticing streets and passageways along which you can wander, finding a different view of the town and river at every turn. Take a two-minute walk past the Lower Ferry, and you will find Bayard’s Cove – a very picturesque (and much-painted) quay of colourful old houses and a small 16th-century fort.
Back in the town centre you can find a wide array of art and craft galleries, interesting shops and
boutiques and an incredible choice of places to eat and drink. A modern library (01803 832502)
and arts facilities are situated in the new Flavel centre (01803 839530) opposite the Tourist
Information Centre (TIC – 01803 834224) on Mayors Avenue.
The town is proud of its strong links with the Royal Navy and is home to the spectacular Britannia
Royal Naval College built in 1902, overlooking the town and out towards Kingswear and the sea.
Tours of the college are available. Check the website www.brnc.co.uk or visit the TIC for more
details. Car parking in the town is limited, but a Park and Ride facility is provided during busy times. Or why not try a different mode of transport…?
Travelling further afield
Relaxing boat trips along the Dart to Dittisham, Greenway or Totnes can be enjoyed, or if you wish
to travel out to sea for fishing, birdwatching or diving, boats can be hired from the Embankment. A steam-train journey can be taken from across the river at Kingswear, winding through lush
woodlands, along the ever-changing riverbank and up to Paignton, giving beautiful views out over
Tor Bay.
To cross the Dart to Kingswear there is a foot passenger ferry and two car ferries. The Lower
Ferry is pulled by a tug and the Higher Ferry runs on cables. These ferries run throughout the year.
Sports facilities and walks
For the more active visitor, Dartmouth has a leisure centre (01803 837010) offering a variety of
organised classes and activities, with modern equipment and facilities together with an indoor pool. A heated open-air swimming pool is open during the summer months.
The choice of town, coastal and rural walks is huge, including the Dart Valley Trail and the South
West Coast Path. Maps can be obtained from the TIC. The terrain varies from gentle hills and lanes to
steep, rugged cliffs and moorland, but wherever you may choose to walk, the views are always
stunning, with an abundance of wildlife to enjoy.

the local area visit the TIC or the website www.discoverdartmouth.com.
